Weddings are big business for registered venues such as hotels, stately homes and restaurants and as such the most in demand are booked up for years ahead for the peak weekends (all weekends from May-September).
So the advice here is once you have set your budget, start visiting the venues and see which ones have the possible dates available that you are after.
Once you've got a particular venue in mind, there are some important questions to ask to make sure that it really is suitable for the sort of reception you want:
Do you like the menu on offer?
Can the venue cater for the number of guests you are inviting?
Do they have a wedding co-coordinator on hand during the day?
Is the reception venue within a reasonable distance of the ceremony? Is it easy to find, or well sign-posted?
Are the any restrictions on what time your reception has to finish by?
Is there any accommodation near by for guests?
Are there adequate cloakroom and lavatory facilities?
Are there facilities for less mobile guests or anyone with a disability?
If children are to be invited, (you are not obligated to invite under 18's) are there any special facilities for them to use, or is there a room that a mobile crèche service can use.
Are there sufficient car parking arrangements
Are any decorations included such as balloons, flowers, table decorations?
As long as all of your queries have been answered then get the venue booked and on with the rest of your planning duties.
